Thai color words are useful from your first market visit. They help you choose clothes, describe food, identify a taxi or building, and ask for a different version of a product. They also repeat one easy pattern: place สี (sii, “color”) before the color name.
This guide teaches the core colors in Thai script, shows where they go in a sentence, explains common shade words, and gives you a short routine for remembering them with the tones intact.
Thai colors quick reference
| English | Thai | Romanization |
|---|---|---|
| red | สีแดง | sii daeng |
| blue | สีน้ำเงิน | sii naam ngoen |
| white | สีขาว | sii khaao |
| black | สีดำ | sii dam |
| yellow | สีเหลือง | sii lueang |
| green | สีเขียว | sii khiao |
| orange | สีส้ม | sii som |
| purple | สีม่วง | sii muang |
| pink | สีชมพู | sii chomphu |
| brown | สีน้ำตาล | sii naam taan |
| gray | สีเทา | sii thao |
| gold | สีทอง | sii thong |
| silver | สีเงิน | sii ngoen |
| light blue / sky blue | สีฟ้า | sii faa |
| navy blue | สีกรมท่า | sii krom thaa |
Practice the full form with สี first. In context, speakers may use a shorter color root, but the full form is clear and easy to recognize as color vocabulary.
Make the prompt visual. Look at a colored square, say สี plus the Thai color, then check the script and audio. Translating from an English list is less direct.
The building block สี
สี (sii) means “color.” Adding it before a word creates the standard color name:
- แดง (daeng) → สีแดง (sii daeng), red
- ทอง (thong) → สีทอง (sii thong), gold
- น้ำตาล (naam taan) → สีน้ำตาล (sii naam taan), brown
Some roots have another everyday meaning. ส้ม can refer to an orange fruit as well as the color orange, and น้ำตาล means sugar as well as brown. สี makes the color meaning explicit.
Thai spelling and tone carry information that romanization cannot show consistently. Learn the script and native audio with each word, even if you use the romanization as a temporary reading aid.
Put Thai colors after the noun
Unlike English, Thai normally places the color description after the object:
- เสื้อสีแดง (suea sii daeng) — a red shirt
- รถสีขาว (rot sii khaao) — a white car
- กระเป๋าสีดำ (krapao sii dam) — a black bag
Think “shirt—color—red.” This noun-first structure is reusable with every entry in the table.
To make a complete description, you can say:
- รถคันนี้สีดำ (rot khan nii sii dam) — This car is black.
- กระเป๋าใบนี้เป็นสีเขียว (krapao bai nii pen sii khiao) — This bag is green.
Thai classifiers such as คัน for vehicles and ใบ for bags appear when identifying “this” particular object. You can begin with the shorter noun-and-color phrase, then add classifiers as your grammar grows.
Ask and answer about colors
สีอะไร (sii arai) means “what color.” Place the object before it.
อันนี้สีอะไร
an nii sii arai
What color is this?
อันนี้สีฟ้า
an nii sii faa
This is light blue.
มีสีอื่นไหม
mii sii uen mai
Do you have another color?
ฉันชอบสีเขียว
chan chop sii khiao
I like green.
In a shop, มีสีอื่นไหม asks whether another color is available. To request one, say เอาสีดำค่ะ/ครับ (ao sii dam kha/khrap), “I'll take the black one,” adding the polite particle appropriate for you.
Light, dark and vivid Thai shades
Put อ่อน (on, light or pale) or เข้ม (khem, dark or deep) after the color:
- สีฟ้าอ่อน (sii faa on) — light blue
- สีเขียวอ่อน (sii khiao on) — light green
- สีน้ำเงินเข้ม (sii naam ngoen khem) — dark blue
- สีม่วงเข้ม (sii muang khem) — deep purple
For a vivid color, you may hear สด (sot), as in สีแดงสด (sii daeng sot), bright or vivid red. สีพาสเทล (sii phastel) refers generally to pastel colors.
The word order remains helpful: color + shade quality. Attach the entire phrase after the noun: เสื้อสีฟ้าอ่อน (suea sii faa on), “a light-blue shirt.”
Thai has more than one everyday blue
Thai commonly distinguishes:
- สีน้ำเงิน (sii naam ngoen) — blue, often a deeper standard blue
- สีฟ้า (sii faa) — sky blue or light blue
- สีกรมท่า (sii krom thaa) — navy blue
The boundary depends on the actual shade and the speaker. A dictionary may translate both น้ำเงิน and ฟ้า simply as “blue,” so visual examples are more useful than one English label.
Color categories do not divide the spectrum in exactly the same way in every language. Save a picture with the Thai term when two English translations overlap.
Colors and days of the week in Thailand
A well-known Thai tradition associates each weekday with a color:
| Day | Traditional color |
|---|---|
| Sunday | red |
| Monday | yellow |
| Tuesday | pink |
| Wednesday | green |
| Thursday | orange |
| Friday | blue |
| Saturday | purple |
These associations can appear in temples, calendars, ceremonies, and choices connected with royal birthdays. Monday's yellow, for example, has been especially visible because King Bhumibol Adulyadej was born on a Monday.
This does not mean everyone must wear the assigned color each day. Treat it as cultural knowledge you may notice, not a universal dress rule. Learn the day names alongside the colors in our Thai days of the week guide.
Thai color associations can depend on religion, astrology, the monarchy, an event, and personal taste. Ask about the context rather than assuming one fixed meaning.
A five-minute Thai color routine
- Point to five objects and say the full สี + color form.
- Add the noun in Thai: เสื้อสีขาว.
- Ask อันนี้สีอะไร and answer it.
- Make one shade light with อ่อน and one dark with เข้ม.
- Record the phrases and compare their tones with native audio.
Repeat the routine in a market, wardrobe, kitchen, or photo. Review in both directions: see a color and produce Thai, then hear Thai and select the right color.
Common mistakes with Thai colors
Putting the color before the noun. Thai normally says เสื้อสีแดง, literally “shirt color red.”
Leaving tones out of memory. A romanized spelling is not the complete word. Keep native audio attached.
Treating ฟ้า and น้ำเงิน as identical. They overlap in English translation but often point to lighter and deeper blues.
Putting อ่อน or เข้ม before the color. The shade modifier normally follows: สีเขียวอ่อน, not the English order.
Confusing ส้ม or น้ำตาล with only one meaning. Context and สี distinguish the color from orange fruit or sugar.
Practice Thai colors
Complete these from memory:
- How do you say “red” with สี?
- Translate: “a white shirt.”
- Ask: “What color is this?”
- Make สีเขียว lighter.
- Which common Thai blue suggests the sky?
- Put these in Thai order: black / bag / color.
Answers
- สีแดง (sii daeng)
- เสื้อสีขาว (suea sii khaao)
- อันนี้สีอะไร (an nii sii arai)
- สีเขียวอ่อน (sii khiao on)
- สีฟ้า (sii faa)
- กระเป๋าสีดำ (krapao sii dam)
Now describe three objects near you, including one light or dark shade.
Common questions about Thai colors
Do I always need สี?
Not always. A shorter color root can appear when the context is clear or inside established expressions. Beginners sound clear and build a reliable pattern by learning the full สี + color form first.
What is the difference between สีฟ้า and สีน้ำเงิน?
สีฟ้า usually suggests sky blue or a lighter blue, while สีน้ำเงิน is the general term for a deeper blue. Actual usage depends on the shade and speaker.
Why is yellow connected with Monday?
Thai weekday color traditions draw on astrological associations. Yellow is Monday's color, and it became especially prominent in modern public life through its connection with King Bhumibol Adulyadej's Monday birthday.
